The town of Esquimalt, BC, Canada is less than ten minutes from Downtown Victoria. The city is surrounded by waterfront and is a historic maritime community. It was founded in 1912 and is home to the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Forces Base. Before the arrival of Europeans, the Esquimalt region was inhabited by First Nations people. The Kosampsom group and the Esquimalt Nation were mentioned in the Hudson's Bay Company's treaties. The name "Esquimalt" comes from a word that means 'place of shoaling waters' in the Songhees dialect. The Songhees people moved to the area in 1911 and speak a dialect of North Straits Salish.
There are many amenities and opportunities in Esquimalt, including more than 30 parks, beaches, and green spaces. There are several elementary schools in Esquimalt, including Macaulay Elementary and Victoria West. Macaulay Elementary is a public elementary school with dual track instruction in French Immersion. Victoria West is a public elementary school, and Craigflower Elementary is on traditional Songhees Nation land.
